Alcon launches new eye drops for MGD
Alcon has announced the launch of a new eye drop range which provides relief from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
The new Systane Balance lubricant eye drops utilise Alcon's LipiTech emulsion technology along with HP Guar, borate, sorbitol and other ingredients to restore the eye's lipid layer and natural tear film.
This helps to address the symptoms of dry eye caused by MGD, a condition which leaves patients unable to adequately prevent the evaporation of tears.
Alcon states that trials of the product have yielded favourable results such as improved tear film stabilisation and lipid layer thickening, while eliminating the risk of blurring associated with many eye drops.
Dr Sabri Markabi, Alcon's chief medical officer and senior vice-president of research and development, said: "We are dedicated to applying scientific rigour to discover treatments for chronic conditions such as dry eye."
Earlier this year, it was announced that Novartis has become Alcon's majority stakeholder after purchasing the shares formerly owned by Nestle.
