Hologic reports positive data from breast cancer therapy trial
Hologic has published data from a five-year study which illustrates the long-term benefits of its MammoSite multi-lumen radiation therapy system.
The effectiveness of the technology, which allows professionals to shape radiation dosing for typical cases, was evaluated in the American Society of Breast Surgeons' MammoSite Breast Brachytherapy Registry Trial.
Of the 1,449 early-stage breast cancer patients involved in the study, only 37 subsequently experienced an ipsilateral breast tumour recurrence, giving a five-year actuarial rate of 3.8 percent.
Carter Houghton, vice-president and general manager of Hologic's interventional breast solutions business, described the findings as a "significant milestone".
He added: "We look forward to expanding the utilisation of accelerated partial breast irradiation by breast cancer patients that may have previously been disqualified for treatment."
Earlier this year, Hologic expanded its presence in the women's health market via the acquisition of Sentinelle Medical, a magnetic resonance imaging technology specialist.
