Biotronik welcomes commencement of TactiCath trial

17th January 2011

Biotronik has congratulated partner Endosense on the initiation of a clinical trial of the new ablation catheter system TactiCath.

The manufacturer has enrolled its first patient in the US Food and Drug Administration-approved Toccastar trial, which will evaluate the efficacy of the device in treating atrial fibrillation (AF).

TactiCath is an irrigated radio frequency contact force catheter that is designed to allow cardiac tissue in the left heart to be effectively targeted and ablated, while minimising the risk of accidental damage.

Endosense will be releasing the product in the US, Japan and Asia, while Biotronik holds the rights to commercialise it in all other major markets.

Marlou Janssen, global vice-president of marketing and sales at Biotronik, said: "Early clinical data suggests it helps to reduce redo procedures in AF ablation, which would subsequently lead to improved efficacy, safety and reproducibility of the therapy."

Last month, the company launched its new Estella and Effecta pacemaker series in Europe after receiving approval from the relevant regulatory bodies.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800346417-ADNFCR
