Researchers devise new magnetically-controlled pill system

18th January 2011

Scientists at Brown University have devised a new magnetic pill system which could enhance the way drugs are delivered to the human body.

The research team has created gelatin capsules containing miniaturised magnets that can be moved around or held in place by an external device, without causing any damage to the surrounding tissue.

This means the pill can be held in the right place within the gastrointestinal tract to ensure maximum absorption of the medicine into the bloodstream, with initial tests among rats proving a success.

According to the scientists, this could enhance treatment options for conditions such as cancer and diabetes, while also aiding research into the areas of the intestine that are most absorbent of different drugs.

The report's lead author Bryan Laulicht said: "It is my hope that magnetic pill retention will be used to enable oral drug delivery solutions to previously unmet medical needs."

Earlier this month, researchers from the University of North Carolina reported they have been able to create synthetic microparticles that mimic red blood cells, opening the door for new drug delivery methods or the possible creation of artificial blood.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800349126-ADNFCR
