Takeda begins enrolment for diabetes mellitus drug trial

9th February 2011

Takeda has commenced enrolment for a new phase III clinical study of alogliptin, a treatment for phase 2 diabetes mellitus.

The first subject has been recruited by the company and its subsidiary Takeda Global Research and Development Center Asia (TGRD Asia) ahead of the placebo-controlled study, which is taking place in China.

Alogliptin was created by Takeda's San Diego division and has already been approved and launched in Japan under the brand name Nesina.

The current clinical trial is intended to support the company's application for regulatory approval of the drug in China, while the treatment is also currently under development for a number of other regions.

Dr James Garner, vice-president and general manager of TGRD Asia, expressed confidence that the study will provide important clinical data and support the company's expansion plans.

Last month, Takeda allied with Amgen to commence a phase III clinical trial of AMG 386, a developmental treatment for ovarian cancer.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800393937-ADNFCR
