New study discovers possible method of re-growing hair
Scientists in the US have discovered a biological mechanism that could pave the way for hair loss treatments.
A team led by researchers from UCLA and the Veterans Administration have accidentally discovered that a peptide called astressin-B can block a stress hormone called corticotrophin-releasing factor, which is linked with premature baldness.
The study was initially designed to assess the effects of stress on gastrointestinal function among mice, but revealed instead that it can provide hair re-growth in a relatively short timeframe.
It has only been demonstrated to be effective among rodents thus far, but the researchers believe it could have potential efficacy in humans as well.
Million Mulugeta, an adjunct professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said: "This could open new venues to treat hair loss in humans through the modulation of the stress hormone receptors, particularly hair loss related to chronic stress and ageing."
Earlier this week, a study into male pattern baldness was published in the Annals of Oncology, which revealed that the condition is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.
