GE Healthcare completes Orbotech Medical Solutions buyout
GE Healthcare has finalised its acquisition of the assets of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector manufacturer Orbotech Medical Solutions.
The completion of the buyout of the former Orbotech business unit facilitates the production of GE Healthcare's Alcyone nuclear medicine technology.
Using CZT detectors in conjunction with focused pin-hole collimation, 3D reconstruction and stationary data acquisition, Alcyone allows clinicians to rapidly scan cardiac anatomy and functionality.
In addition, CZT technology is utilised by GE Healthcare in the Discovery NM750b Molecular Breast Imaging system, which was recently approved by US healthcare regulators.
Nathan Hermony, general manager for nuclear medicine at GE Healthcare, said: "We've entered a new frontier of possibilities in nuclear medicine as we use CZT technology not only in cardiac exams, but apply it to other critical areas."
This week, the company attended the Health Information Management and Systems Society, where it demonstrated new IT innovations that allow clinicians to view electronic records on mobile devices.
