GlaxoSmithKline pledges support to earthquake relief efforts in Japan

GlaxoSmithKline has outlined the measures it is taking to help authorities and not-for-profit organisations to carry out relief action following the recent earthquake in Japan.

The pharmaceutical company has contributed the equivalent of around 1.5 million pounds to the Japanese Red Cross to finance the immediate relief efforts, such as the need to supply clean water, food and blankets to those affected.

It has also donated approximately 600,000 pounds worth of self-medication goods, including cold medicines and oral care products, in response to requests from the authorities.

GlaxoSmithKline will continue to work with organisations such as the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association to support the nation's recovery following the March 11th 2011 quake.

The firm said in a statement: "We are continuing to watch the situation closely and will provide additional support as the situation evolves."

Last month, GlaxoSmithKline was presented with Nalco's 2010 Environmental Stewardship Award thanks to its success in reducing energy and water usage in the last year.
