Shire presents positive trial data for HAE drug Firazyr

24th March 2011

Shire has published new clinical data that supports the safety and efficacy of Firazyr, its treatment for acute attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE).

Results have been published by the company from Fast-3, a large-scale phase III clinical trial conducted in nine countries which compared the subcutaneous therapy's efficacy to placebo.

It was found that Firazyr was able to deliver symptom relief within a rapid time scale, while also accelerating the resolution of attacks.

Additionally, the study showed that no patients using Shire's drug required rescue medication before the onset of symptom relief, compared to 36 percent of those in the control group.

Dr William Lumry, clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, said: "The complete Fast-3 data demonstrates Firazyr's efficacy and safety further illustrating the utility of a bradykinin B2 receptor antagonist to treat acute HAE attacks."

Earlier this month, Shire was granted European Commission approval for Firazyr to be self-administered by patients with appropriate training.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800474433-ADNFCR
