CareFusion and West to develop needle-free vial access device

CareFusion is allying with West Pharmaceutical Services on the creation of a new needle-free vial access device for use in drug administration.

The device will be based on CareFusion's needle-free connector and closed male luer technologies, combined with West's vented vial adapter, and will prevent leakage, surface contamination and exposure to dangerous substances.

Due to be made available later this year, the system will make the process of drug reconstitution easier and safer for medical professionals administering chemotherapy, antivirals and other cytotoxic drug products.

Bob Tolliver, director of original equipment manufacturer business development for infusion at CareFusion, said: "This innovative component will be a strong addition to our existing portfolio designed to help protect clinicians from accidental exposure to hazardous drugs."

This represents the latest phase of a five-year global distribution and supply agreement between the firms.

Earlier this month, CareFusion announced that healthcare technology expert Dr Carlos Nunez has been appointed as its new chief medical officer.
