Merck Serono commits to supporting MS patients in work
Merck Serono has outlined the measures it will be taking to ensure that those affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) are able to continue working with the company.
Responding to an initiative led by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation, the company is looking to enshrine policies such as flexible hours, home working and adaptive office environments as key elements of its employment practices.
According to a poll commissioned by Merck Serono, 80 percent of MS sufferers feel they need more support from employers to allow them to remain in their jobs, while nearly half of patients feel compelled to stop working within three years of diagnosis.
Dietmar Eidens, head of global human resources at Merck Serono, said it will be applying its new employment policies in its offices across Europe.
He added: "We look forward to other companies joining us in our commitment and addressing multiple sclerosis at work."
This week, the company is also conducting various initiatives to improve understanding of thyroid conditions, tying in with International Thyroid Awareness Week.
