Biotronik launches innovative single-chamber ICD

Biotronik has announced the launch of an innovative new single-chamber implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD).

The Lumax 540 VR-T DX ICD is being introduced alongside the Linoxsmart S DX cardiac lead system and features integrated special atrial sensors and advanced discrimination algorithms.

It is the first single-chamber ICD in the world to include complete atrial diagnostics, allowing the device to fulfil an unmet clinical need by offering the ability to accurately sense atrial arrhythmias.

This corrects a problem with traditional ICD units, which can often misidentify atrial events with ventricular tachycardias and deliver shocks at inappropriate times.

Dr Alexander Schirdewan of the Charite University Hospital, Campus Benjamin Franklin in Berlin said this means the device can also help physicians to intervene in a timelier manner.

Last month, the company published data from a new clinical study supporting the efficacy of its groundbreaking Orsiro Hybrid drug-eluting stent, which features both passive and active components.
