Biogen Idec to fully acquire Dompe joint ventures organisations

Biogen Idec has announced that it will be taking full control of the European joint venture organisations it currently operates in partnership with Italian healthcare firm Dompe.

The agreement will see Biogen Idec purchase 100 percent of Dompe's shares in joint ventures based in Italy and Switzerland, which will be renamed Biogen Idec Italia and Biogen Idec Switzerland thereafter.

By agreeing to this new arrangement, both companies will be able to increase their focus on core activities, while Biogen Idec will be able to expand its direct commercial presence across Europe.

Francesco Granata, executive vice-president of global commercial operations at Biogen Idec, credited the 15-year partnership with helping it to solidify its position as a leader in multiple sclerosis research.

"To maintain this leadership position in an increasingly complex industry, we must have greater focus on our operational efficiencies and the use of our resources," he added.

According to the firm's most recent financial report, Biogen Idec has demonstrated positive momentum in 2011, thanks to strong sales of products such as Tysabri.
