Covidien reports positive data from surgical stapling system trial

Covidien has reported data from a new study that demonstrates the benefits of its new powered surgical stapling system.

The company's iDrive powered handle and Right Angle Linear Cutter (RALC) were compared to a competing mechanical stapling device in a pre-clinical study, in which doctors performed pelvic dissections and mesorectal excisions on 12 male cadavers.

It was found that Covidien's offering provided deeper access, improved visibility and easier placement inside the lower pelvis than the rival system, with surgeons responding well to the device.

This could offer a range of patient outcome benefits, such as improved tumour clearance or elimination of the need for a permanent colostomy.

Dr Michael Tarnoff, chief medical officer at Covidien, said: "We believe that the iDrive powered handle and RALC system … will continue to be well-received by surgeons and will enhance Covidien's role in leading the emerging intelligent surgical tools category."

Earlier this month, the company announced the introduction of the Kendall Skin Wellness System, a range of barrier creams, lotions and cleansers for use in skincare.
