Novartis presents positive trial data for COPD therapy

Novartis has published positive data from new phase III clinical trials of its developmental chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) drug NVA237.

Results from the Glow1 and Glow3 studies have shown that the once-daily glycopyrronium bromide-based therapy can provide superior 24-hour bronchodilation and increased exercise endurance among COPD patients, compared to placebo.

It was also demonstrated to significantly prolong time to the first signs of moderate/severe COPD exacerbation, while also reducing the rate of hospitalisations associated with the condition.

Novartis will use the data to support its efforts to seek European regulatory approval for NVA237, which is to be marketed under the brand name Seebri Breezhaler.

David Epstein, division head of Novartis Pharmaceuticals, said: "These results illustrate the potential benefits of NVA237 for COPD patients and are especially encouraging as we move ahead with plans to develop a fixed-dose combination with Onbrez Breezhaler."

Earlier this week, the company also announced data from a phase III study of Afinitor, showing its efficacy as a breast cancer therapy.
