New NHS whistleblowing helpline launched
The Department of Health has launched a new helpline that will allow NHS and social care staff to raise concerns over poor practice.
From January 1st 2012, healthcare workers will have access to a free dedicated whistleblowing helpline that is being funded by the government as part of its efforts to raise standards.
The launch coincides with the introduction of a contractual duty to flag up concerns over issues that could affect patient care, which is being enshrined in the new NHS Constitution.
In addition, a web-based whistleblowing service is being developed and will be introduced in the near future.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "This will play an important role in creating a culture where staff will be able to raise genuine concerns in good faith, without fear of reprisal."
Changes will be made to the NHS Constitution to reflect these new policies in early 2012, including a pledge that whistleblowers will be fully supported when raising these issues.
