Boston Scientific reports positive Epic stent trial data

Boston Scientific has published new clinical data that supports the positive clinical profile of its Epic self-expanding nitinol stent system.

The device has been evaluated in a US-based trial called Orion, conducted among 125 patients, which assessed the performance of the stent among patients with iliac artery disease.

Following a nine-month study period, it was found that the Epic stent was able to deliver a low rate of major adverse events such as death, myocardial infarction or target vessel revascularisation, thus meeting its primary efficacy endpoint.

It was also able to deliver significant clinical improvements in terms of walking distance, speed and stair climbing aptitude.

Jeff Mirviss, president of Boston Scientific's peripheral interventions business, said: "The Epic stent has been used successfully in Europe for several years and we look forward to offering the device to US physicians."

Earlier this month, the company was granted approval for its Alair bronchial thermoplasty system to be funded via the Medicare scheme in the US.
