Abbott’s Starlims technology to be employed by FDA

Abbott's Starlims software-based laboratory information management system (LIMS) is to be implemented by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The influential regulatory body will be using the technology to analyse and manage the large quantity of information generated by its laboratories, as part of an agreement with provider Dovel Technologies.

LIMS solutions from Abbott are to be rolled out by the FDA's office for regulatory affairs, which operates five types of laboratories in 14 separate locations.

It will allow around 825 users to manage their analytical workflows more efficiently, supporting functions such as sample accountability, data analysis, document control and report generation.

Isaac Friedman, head of Abbott's Starlims business, said: "Starlims has a successful track record in implementing web-based LIMS for life sciences organisations, public health laboratories and a number of federal agencies."

Last month, the company announced a new alliance with the University of Illinois to found a new centre for research in the fields of nutrition, learning and memory.
