New strategy recommended on genomic technology applications

The government has received recommendations from an independent advisory group on measures it can implement to ensure that UK patients have greater access to innovative genomic technology.

Professor Sir John Bell and the Human Genomics Strategy Group have endorsed the creation of a new strategic document to set the direction on genomic technology adoption in the NHS, as part of a number of proposed measures.

Further recommendations include the development of a national central genomic data storage facility and a service delivery model for new technologies, as well as more widespread efforts to improve education and awareness of the field.

This comes after more than 50 million pounds was invested in genetic testing research over the last decade, resulting in the creation of tests for more than 1,000 diseases, including sickle cell anaemia, cystic fibrosis and many cancer strains.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "The new developments can help patients to get the best treatments to improve their chances of survival and their quality of life."

Last week, the government revealed plans to launch a new consultation on the potential legalisation of a new genetic procedure that could help women to avoid passing mitochondrial disease on to their children.
