Shire’s Fosrenol approved in powder specification
Shire has been granted EU approval for a new oral powder specification of Fosrenol, its treatment for chronic kidney disease.
The company has received ratification for sale of the drug via the European Decentralised Procedure, allowing it to be used as a phosphate binding agent for controlling hyperphosphataemia in chronic renal failure patients on haemodialysis or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
Sweden's medical products agency acted as reference member state for this approval process, with the safety and efficacy of the new treatment option having been demonstrated in clinical trials.
The launch of the new product gives patients more choice in how they take their phosphate binder.
Angus Hogg, general manager for products at Shire, said: "We believe the new oral powder formulation of Fosrenol demonstrates our commitment to enabling people with life-altering conditions to lead better lives."
Last week, the company announced plans to launch a new trial of its ADHD therapy Vyvanse, which will compare the performance of the therapy option to Concerta.
