GlaxoSmithKline to launch new UK apprenticeship scheme

GlaxoSmithKline is launching a new multidisciplinary apprenticeship scheme in the UK as part of its efforts to support youth training in the British life sciences sector.

The new scheme will commence in August 2012 and will initially see 40 apprentices aged between 16 and 24 years old given positions at the pharmaceutical company's manufacturing, research and development and corporate sites.

Sites participating in the programme include Barnard Castle, GSK House in London, Irvine, Maidenhead, Montrose and Slough, with opportunities to be offered in areas such as IT, supply chain management and artwork design.

Apprenticeships will last between two and four years and will allow participants to benefit from a competitive pay rate and in-depth mentoring, as well as the possibility of a job offer.

Natalie Woodford, senior vice-president for talent, leadership and organisation development at GlaxoSmithKline, said: "We are delighted to announce this programme today, which will give young people hands-on experience in the life sciences industry, a key sector for the UK."

Over the last year, the company has been carrying out a nationwide Scientists in Sport schools outreach programme, with the aim of encouraging young people to pursue life science careers in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
