Novo Nordisk launches insulin access initiative in Kenya

Novo Nordisk has announced the launch of a new programme designed to make insulin and diabetes care more accessible to patients in Kenya.

The company is allying with local organisations and faith-based hospitals and clinics to create a new business model that incorporates a streamlined supply chain and more conveniently located treatment centres.

Through these changes, insulin can now be obtained at one-third of the previous private market price, which will help deliver supplies of the medication to more of the 250,000 people who are in need of insulin in Kenya.

It is the first of three pilot schemes that will be launched by Novo Nordisk this year, with the second being planned for India and the third to be introduced in Nigeria.

"The pilot projects will create valuable learnings on how access to insulin and proper diabetes care can be improved for people with diabetes with very low incomes," the company said.

Earlier this month, Novo Nordisk's diabetes therapy Victoza received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to advertise its superior efficacy compared with a leading alternative.
