Bayer HealthCare’s Xarelto shows efficacy in real-world study

Bayer HealthCare has announced positive data from the first ever real-world study of its innovative once-daily oral anticoagulant Xarelto.

The international, non-interventional study Xamos was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Xarelto for preventing dangerous venous blood clots among more than 17,000 orthopaedic surgery patients.

It was found that Bayer's rivaroxaban therapy can deliver significant benefits in the prevention of venous thromboembolism, thus supporting the conclusions of the earlier Record clinical trial programme.

Luis Felipe Graterol, medical director for Bayer HealthCare UK, said the data will provide "further confidence to prescribers with regards to the clinical potential of Xarelto to deliver effective protection against venous blood clots, while removing some of the limitations common to conventional regimens".

Earlier this month, the company submitted a new European regulatory filing for Xarelto as a treatment for pulmonary embolism (PE) and for the prevention of recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and PE in adults.

This application was supported by positive data from the recent phase III Einstein-PE study.
