Medtronic’s CoreValve system shows benefits for female patients

Medtronic has reported data from a new clinical study showing the benefits its CoreValve System can provide to patients of both genders.

Data from the Medtronic CoreValve Advance Study has revealed that CoreValve offered similar benefits to male and female patients at high risk for surgical aortic valve replacement, with nearly identical survival rates between genders.

Additionally, no statistical differences were noted in 30-day and six-month all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality or major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events endpoint data.

These findings are significant, given that female patients with severe aortic stenosis typically have different risk profiles from men.

Dr Axel Linke, professor of medicine at Universitat Leipzig Herzzentrum, said the trial offers "a compelling discovery that the CoreValve System is an excellent therapeutic option for both men and women, and it helps us begin to consider how men and women present differently prior to implant and might be managed accordingly".

Last week, Medtronic was granted European approval for new indications of its versatile Resolute Integrity coronary stent system.
