Merck Millipore highlights benefits of Mobius CellReady 3 L bioreactor

Merck Millipore has highlighted new data showcasing the benefits provided by its Mobius CellReady 3 L single-use bioreactor in the large-scale production of human stem cells on collagen microcarriers.

Routine expansion of human mesenchymal stem cells using the device has shown consistent production rates, offering cell yields of up to 700 million cells in 2.8L after two weeks of growth.

Through this new application, large-scale production can be achieved at up to one-third of the cost per dose compared to cells grown in flat culture stacks.

According to the manufacturer, the system is also useful due to its ability to combine the predictability of a stirred tank design with the flexibility of a single-use device, making it perfect for bench-scale cell culture process development.

Robert Shaw, commercial director for Merck Millipore's stem cell initiative, said: "While current methods utilising flat culture may be sufficient at the early development and clinical trial stage, cost-effective large scale methods are needed to meet increasing market demand."

Last month, the company received a 2012 red dot product design award for its recently-launched Muse Cell Analyser.
