Sanofi reports positive data for MACI implant device

Sanofi has reported positive clinical data showing the benefits of its MACI device in the treatment of symptomatic articular cartilage defects.

The matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implant met its co-primary endpoint in a two-year trial comparing it to microfracture, a surgical procedure designed to stimulate the growth of new cartilage.

Sanofi's therapy system uses a patient's own cultured cartilage cells to repair articular cartilage defects in the knee joint, allowing patients to regain mobility and experience less pain.

This data will be used to support regulatory filings for MACI in both Europe and the US.

Leanna Caron, vice-president and general manager of Sanofi Biosurgery's cell therapy and regenerative medicine division, said: "MACI may offer orthopaedic surgeons an advanced, minimally invasive product to treat patients with debilitating knee pain from articular cartilage injuries in the knee."

Earlier this month, the company announced the divestiture of its stake in the personal care company Yves Rocher, a move designed to help Sanofi increase its focus on core areas.
