BVA announces introductory course for foreign vets

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has announced a new two-day course in November that will provide foreign vets with the information and support they need when working in the UK.

Organised in collaboration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Veterinary Defence Society, the course will be aimed at overseas vets who have relocated to the UK within the last two years, or those considering moving to the country.

The first module covers how the British veterinary profession is organised, including information on employment rights and support structures, while the second addresses communication skills.

It is hoped that this will improve foreign professionals' understanding of their legal duties and ensure they do not become the subjects of complaints.

BVA president Carl Padgett said: "Adjusting to life and veterinary work in the UK can be challenging, not least because of the very demanding clientele. This course will give participants a solid foundation, so that they know what to expect."

Last week, the BVA welcomed the publication of new Federation of Veterinarians of Europe guidance for vets on the responsible use of antimicrobials.
