AstraZeneca’s Brilique shows efficacy for patents of all ages

AstraZeneca has presented data from a new clinical sub-analysis that demonstrates the efficacy of its acute coronary syndrome (ACS) drug Brilique among a variety of patients.

Analysing results from the Plato trial, the greater reduction in thrombotic cardiovascular events with Brilique tablets plus aspirin, compared to clopidogrel plus aspirin, were shown to be consistent regardless of age.

This is an important finding given that approximately 33 percent of all acute coronary syndrome episodes occur among patients over 75 years of age, and strengthens the clinical profile of AstraZeneca's drug, which is marketed as Brilinta in the US.

Dr James Ferguson, executive director for medical affairs and strategic development, and vice-president for global medical affairs at AstraZeneca, said: "This Plato sub-analysis suggests that the clinical benefits of Brilinta vs clopidogrel on thrombotic cardiovascular events … were similar in patients 75 years of age and older and younger patients."

Earlier this month, a separate sub-analysis of the Plato trial showed that Brilique's efficacy is also unaffected by a patient's smoking habits.
