GlaxoSmithKline reports positive Votrient trial data

GlaxoSmithKline has presented new clinical trial data that demonstrates the benefits offered by its cancer therapy Votrient compared to a leading alternative.

Data from the phase III study Comparz has been presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology's annual congress, showing that Votrient was able to meet its primary efficacy endpoint goal in the trial.

It was proven that GlaxoSmithKline's drug delivered non-inferior performance to sunitinib in terms of progression-free survival, while it was also shown to offer quality of life benefits.

By providing direct comparison data on these two drugs, GlaxoSmithKline hopes to facilitate the decision-making process for cancer physicians.

Dr Paolo Paoletti, president of GlaxoSmithKline Oncology, said: "We are pleased with the results of the Comparz study and look forward to sharing our findings with the physicians who treat advanced renal cell carcinoma."

Last month, the company announced that it has commenced a new phase III trial of the rheumatoid arthritis drug sirukumab, in association with partner Janssen Biologics.
