Government-backed Stoptober anti-smoking campaign launches
The Department of Health has officially launched Stoptober, a new national campaign that will call on all smokers to kick the habit for 28 days.
Running throughout October 2012, the initiative will be backed by a number of celebrity spokespeople, including former England footballer Ian Wright, make-up artist Gary Cockerill and former Apprentice contestant Kate Walsh.
An accompanying smartphone app, Facebook page and support pack will be released to provide daily support and encouragement, while individuals will also be educated on the wellness, financial and aesthetic benefits of quitting.
The overall aim of the campaign will be to limit the negative health impact of smoking, which causes more than 100,000 fatalities each year in the UK, making it the nation's leading cause of premature death.
Wright said: "Smoking is detrimental to our health, not just for the smoker, but for all of those around them too."
The scheme is being backed by a number of high-profile businesses, including Next, Unilever and Morrison's, which will be encouraging staff and members of the public to take part.
