BD launches detection assay for superbug CRE
BD has announced the launch of a new molecular test that can rapidly detect antibiotic resistance genes found in the superbug known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).
The research use-only assay is performed using the fully automated BD Max system and produces results in only two hours, compared to several days when using conventional culture methods.
BD is making the assay available to a limited number of infectious disease experts and researchers to gather feedback on its performance, as it seeks to create more widely applicable detection systems for this emerging superbug.
Currently, CRE organisms are associated with high mortality rates, are easily spread between patients and resist nearly all antibiotics, with no treatments available for many infections.
Dr Patrick Murray, worldwide director of scientific affairs for the diagnostic systems division of BD, said: "We are offering this assay initially as a research tool to help BD and infectious disease researchers explore its clinical utility while we pursue development of an in-vitro diagnostic solution."
