BDA: Scottish dentists facing challenging conditions

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called for dental practitioners in Scotland to be better supported, following the publication of new NHS data showing the difficult conditions they face.

Figures from the NHS Information Centre's dental earnings and expenses report show that average taxable income for self-employed dentists working in general dental services in Scotland fell by 7.6 percent in 2010/11.

Meanwhile, a separate working hours report showed the percentage of time spent providing NHS care rose from 76.1 percent in 2008/09 to 79.7 percent in 2011/12, with a growing amount of time taken up by non-clinical activity.

Dr Robert Donald, chair of the BDA's Scottish dental practice committee, said more support must therefore be given for constructive initiatives such as Childsmile and the General Dental Practice Allowance, which help dentists make a positive difference.

He added: "Dentists recognise the pressures facing the public purse, but oral health is something that must be invested in over time. It's important that is not only remembered, but also acted on."

Earlier this month, the BDA held a fringe meeting at the SNP annual conference to discuss ways of enhancing oral health in Scotland's residential homes.
