GlaxoSmithKline begins phase III testing for asthma therapy

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the start of a phase III programme to evaluate the safety and efficacy of mepolizumab, an investigational therapy for severe uncontrolled refractory asthma.

The trial programme consists of two key studies, MEA115588 and MEA115575, which will assess the new IL-5 antagonist as an adjunctive therapy option for this serious respiratory condition.

In the first of these trials, the compound will be judged in terms of its ability to reduce the frequency of clinically significant exacerbations, while the second will examine its potential to reduce steroid use among patients.

The programme will also include safety extension trials to further assess treatment of subsequent asthma attacks in mepolizumab-naive as well as previously-treated patients.

Steve Yancey, vice-president and head of GlaxoSmithKline's mepolizumab development team, said: "The progression of this phase III programme represents a significant milestone in the clinical development of mepolizumab as a potential treatment option for patients with severe uncontrolled refractory asthma."

Last week, the company reported positive data from phase III trials that showcased the potential benefits of its two innovative quadrivalent influenza vaccine candidates.
