Biogen Idec announces publication of positive Alprolix trial data

Biogen Idec has announced the publication of new clinical trial data from a pivotal phase III study of the haemophilia B drug Alprolix.

Results from the B-LONG study have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showcasing the benefits of the investigational long-lasting recombinant factor IX Fc fusion protein candidate, which is administered once every one or two weeks.

It was found that prophylactic infusions of the drug were able to safely and effectively prevent or reduce bleeding episodes among patients, a conclusion that will increases Alprolix's chances of receiving regulatory approval.

The product is the first long-lasting investigational therapy for haemophilia B to complete a phase III study.

Dr Glenn Pierce, senior vice-president of global medical affairs and chief medical officer at Biogen Idec's haemophilia therapeutic area, said: "If approved, long-lasting Alprolix therapy will have the potential to change the way haemophilia B is managed and address a critical need for patients."

The company will be sharing its latest data on Alprolix and other haemophilia therapies at this week's annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology in New Orleans.
