New study discovers potential inhibitor for deadly soft-tissue cancer
New research may have discovered a means of eradicating a deadly soft-tissue cancer.
A study carried out at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center found inhibiting the action of a protein named BRD4 could kill cancer cells in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs).
The tests were conducted on mice and suggest a breakthrough treatment for this typically fatal cancer, which has thus far been incurable.
MPNSTs are aggressive sarcomas that form close to nerves. Around half of the tumours develop in people suffering with the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 1, which affects one person per 3,500.
This new research suggests there may be an alternative treatment to surgical removal, which is often difficult or impossible due to the tumour's proximity to nerves.
Dr Lu Le, assistant-professor of dermatology at UT Southwestern, stated: "BRD4 inhibition is exquisitely effective against MPNSTs and may represent a paradigm shift in therapy for these patients."
