New nursing apprenticeship scheme to be introduced

The government is preparing to launch a nursing apprenticeship scheme that will allow apprentices to train directly towards becoming a nurse for the first time.

A trailblazer group is currently developing the initiative, which will be targeted at the most talented healthcare assistants and care workers, with the aim of widening access to nursing.

Those who have proven they can give high-quality care to patients – but do not have the academic qualifications necessary to get on to a nursing degree – will be given a new route to advance their careers and a chance to use their vocational experience of working.

The scheme is being introduced as part of the response to the Francis Inquiry and will provide the NHS with a new source of qualified, competent workers.

Health minister Dr Dan Poulter said: "We are supporting people with a record of hard work and dedication to our NHS to progress their careers and get on in life."

The government is also preparing to introduce new regulations that will compel NHS trusts to publish data on safe staffing levels from April 2014, in order to ensure care quality standards are being upheld.
