New smoking cessation guidance released for dental teams
The government has announced the launch of new guidance for dental health professionals, detailing how they can help patients to quit smoking most effectively.
Released to coincide with No Smoking Day on March 12th 2014, the Smokefree and Smiling guidance helps dentists to provide concise advice to tobacco users using a 30-second approach.
This involves three simple steps – asking about their smoking status, advising on the oral health benefits of quitting and acting to signpost them to local smoking cessation services.
Past research has shown that people who receive support from stop smoking services are up to four times more likely to stay smoke-free than those who do not.
Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer at NHS England, said: "Dental teams play an essential role in promoting good oral and general health. This guidance will ensure they can effectively support their patients to move towards quitting tobacco."
More than eight million people in England smoke, with one in two smokers ultimately dying from a smoking-related disease. The habit can lead to an increased chance of oral cancer, as well as damaging the appearance and integrity of the teeth.
