Bausch and Lomb licenses surgical navigation system from Cirle

Bausch and Lomb has signed an exclusive license agreement for a three-dimensional surgical navigation technology from Miami-based medical technology incubator Cirle.

Under the terms of the deal, Bausch and Lomb will be commercialising the device for cataract surgery applications. The device is not currently commercially available in the US.

The Cirle Surgical Navigation System was developed through a collaboration between Bausch and Lomb and Cirle, aimed at developing new technologies to help fill the unmet needs of the eye health community.

Originally announced in late 2012, the partnership with Cirle allows the company to leverage its business and commercial capabilities while working with leading eye health experts and medical researchers.

Dr Cal Roberts, chief medical officer at Bausch and Lomb, said: "The Cirle Surgical Navigation System will be an important addition to ophthalmic operating rooms, which we believe will help us obtain a leading position in this market category."

This comes after the firm introduced its new Activate System Control Software for the Stellaris and Stellaris PC lines of phacoemulsification and vitrectomy equipment at an industry conference last month.
