Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim report positive data for new insulin product

Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim have reported positive clinical trial data for their investigational insulin glargine product LY2963016 at the American Diabetes Association scientific sessions.

During the event in San Francisco, the companies shared data from six completed phase I and phase III studies, revealing that the new agent offers a similar safety and efficacy profile to Sanofi’s currently marketed insulin glargine Lantus.

The newer drug was shown to work similarly in the body and produce comparable clinical results to Lantus. It has the same amino acid sequence and will be submitted for approval as a biosimilar in most geographic regions.

An LY2963016 insulin glargine data package has already been submitted to several global regulatory agencies, including the US, Europe and Japan.

Dr Gwen Krivi, vice-president at Lilly Diabetes Development, said: “This is one step closer to providing an important insulin glargine option to physicians and patients.”

Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim have been collaborating on the development of diabetes therapies since 2011. Last month, they received EU approval for Jardiance, their latest offering in this category.
