New report calls for action on sugar reduction

30th June 2014

A new report has called for action to be taken to reduce the amount of sugar the UK eats as a nation.

'Sugar Reduction: Responding to the Challenge' has been published by Public Health England (PHE) and wants charities, businesses, other organisations and the public to work together to cut down on sugar consumption.

Dr Alison Tedstone, PHE chief nutritionist, stated: "Eating too much sugar is harming our health; excess sugar and calorie intake leads to being overweight and obese."

She added this drastically increases the chances of people contracting health problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and breast and colon cancer.

The PHE report sets out a number of areas that it feels should be explored to work out how sugar reduction can be achieved.

One option is the 'Sugar Swaps' campaign, which informs parents on how they can exchange sugary elements of their children's diet for healthier alternatives.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801732213-ADNFCR
