Boehringer Ingelheim hails significant global progress in PRRSV treatment

Boehringer Ingelheim has highlighted the role it has played in improving treatment standards for porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in the last 20 years.

Over the past 20 years, the company has been a leader in funding both collaborative and original research in the area of PRRS, with the 1994 launch of its Ingelvac PRRS MLV vaccine – the first product of its kind – proving a watershed moment.

Since then, significant advancements have been made in the areas of biosecurity, disease transmission, immune management and disease monitoring, ensuring that crucial objectives of a successful PRRS control programme are now understood.

The company continues to conduct collaborative research into this area and regularly funds innovative new studies to further advance awareness of how best to tackle the problem.

Dr Edgar Diaz, senior associate director for tech marketing at Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, said: "We have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in controlling PRRS over the past 20 years, but there is still work to be done."

The firm is currently still accepting applications for next year's Advancement in PRRS Research Awards, which is open to scientists in the US, Canada and Mexico.
