AstraZeneca unveils detailed plans for new Cambridge headquarters

AstraZeneca has revealed the proposed designs for its new global research and development centre and corporate headquarters in Cambridge, which will commence construction in 2015.

The technology labs on the site will be separated from other work spaces by glass walls to promote a 'visible science' approach, with a number of open spaces and thoroughfares to promote collaboration between the company and the rest of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Unique characteristics of Cambridge's historic centre and the prestigious Cambridge University will influence the overall aesthetic design, while the firm is also seeking Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology Excellent status for the site.

In advance of the new facility becoming operational in late 2016, around 70 AstraZeneca staff have already relocated to interim facilities at the Melbourn Science Park, Cambridge Science Park and Granta Park. By year's end, around 300 to 400 staff members will have moved to the city.

Mene Pangalos, executive vice-president for innovative medicines and early development at AstraZeneca, said: "Our aim is to create an open, welcoming and vibrant centre that will inspire our teams and partners to push the boundaries of scientific innovation."

Designed by architect Herzog and de Meuron, the new centre is being developed with a budget of more than 300 million pounds.
