AstraZeneca study shows flexibility of Brilinta treatment approach

AstraZeneca has reported data from a new phase IV trial that further underlines the benefits of its acute coronary syndrome therapy Brilinta.

Results from the Atlantic study has indicated that the drug offers similar levels of efficacy whether administered in a pre-hospital or in-hospital setting for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

Previous studies have shown that the the effectiveness of pre-percutaneous coronary interventions can be impacted by delays caused when transferring patients with acute STEMI to the catheterisation lab in hospital, resulting in a higher mortality risk.

As such, the new findings offer evidence that Brilinta is best used at the first point of medical contact among patients in this category.

Marc Ditmarsch, global development lead for AstraZeneca, said: "The results from the Atlantic study allow us to better understand the role of Brilinta in treating STEMI patients."

The blockbuster sales of Brilinta have led the company to designate the drug as one of its five key pillars for growth in the coming years.
