Boehringer Ingelheim presents new Pradaxa data at ESC 2014

Boehringer Ingelheim has presented new clinical data underlining the efficacy of its drug Pradaxa at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) annual congress.

During the event in Barcelona, the firm presented findings from a sub-analysis of the pivotal RE-LY clinical trial, showing that kidney function decline is less pronounced in patients with an irregular heartbeat who are treated with Pradaxa than those receiving warfarin.

Although a natural decline in kidney function is an inevitable part of the ageing process and a result of other underlying diseases, Pradaxa treatment can help to mitigate this trend compared to the older drug.

This data provides additional support for the long-term use of Pradaxa in stroke prevention among non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients.

Additionally, the firm announced the launch of phase III of its GLORIA-AF registry programme for Pradaxa in North America and Europe, during which data on the overall safety and effectiveness of antithrombotic treatments will be collected.
