Idexx Laboratories launches new tests for diagnosing itchy pets

Idexx Laboratories has launched its new Sarcoptes Antibody ELISA and Ringworm RealPCR Panel, two new tools to assist in the diagnosis of itchy pets.

The Sarcoptes Antibody ELISA test is designed to help diagnose sarcoptic mange in dogs based on clinical signs. This condition is currently diagnosed by skin scraping, but most often confirmed through response to treatment.

Meanwhile, the Ringworm RealPCR Panel uses real-time polymerase chain reaction technology to detect dermatophytosis in cats and dogs. It provides reliable results in one to three working days, compared to weeks using traditional methods.

Since itches can be caused by a variety of factors – including allergies, parasites and infections – they are among the leading reasons for pet owners to bring their animals in to be checked out.

Mike Lane, vice-president for Idexx Reference Laboratories, said: "Identifying the cause of itch can be challenging and time-consuming for veterinarians and frustrating for pet owners who want to know that their pet is healthy and comfortable."

This follows last month's launch of the RealPCR BVDV RNA Test, a new method of diagnosing bovine viral diarrhoea virus.
