Biotronik and CFI Medical receive approval for radiation protection system
Biotronik and CFI Medical have been granted European CE Mark approval for a suspended radiation protection system floor unit for use in cath labs.
The Zero-Gravity system is manufactured by CFI Medical and will be distributed outside North America exclusively by Biotronik. The flexible floor unit acts as a single, continuous lead barrier that covers critical parts of the body without exerting pressure.
Incorporating a body shield and a clear acrylic head shield that are suspended from a rail attached to a wheeled base, the Zero-Gravity system allows the clinician to move freely within the cath lab, while remaining fully protected.
Conventional radiation protective apparel has been shown to cause great physical stress, leading to occupational injuries. This new system was developed to remedy these problems and has been available in the US since 2010.
Udo Tegtmeyer, managing director at Biotronik, said: "This personal protective equipment shows that we care about the needs of both patients and physicians. The technology will revolutionise the cath lab setup, dramatically reducing the occupational risks of radiation."
Biotronik is one of the world's leading manufacturers of cardiovascular and endovascular medical devices, with more than 5,600 employees globally.
