BDA dental committee passes vote of no confidence in GDC

The British Dental Association (BDA) has announced that the body representing the UK's general dental practitioners has passed a vote of no confidence in the General Dental Council (GDC).

A vote by the General Dental Practice Committee saw the motion passed unanimously, with the resolution stating that the GDC can no longer be considered fit for purpose to regulate the dental industry and protect patients.

This resolution will now be passed to the BDA Principal Executive Committee for further consideration, with the move reflecting the considerable anger within the dental community towards the regulator's recent conduct.

Considerable criticism has been aimed at the GDC over the last few months due to its controversial decision to implement a 64 percent increase to its annual retention fee.

A consultation run by the organisation revealed that an overwhelming 97 percent majority of dental professionals oppose the fee increase.

John Milne, chair of the BDA's General Dental Practice Committee, said: "This resolution recognises we need more than sticking plasters to secure the proportionate, fair and cost effective regulation we deserve."
