Servier and GeNeuro to develop multiple sclerosis therapy

Servier has announced a new collaboration with GeNeuro on the development of a potentially groundbreaking therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS).

The alliance will centre on a compound called GNbAC1, a humanised monoclonal antibody that targets MSRV-Env, the envelope protein of an MS-associated retrovirus that causes inflammation and inhibits remyelination, making it a major driver of MS pathophysiology.

As the first drug addressing a causal factor of the disease, it could be a revolutionary new therapy. GeNeuro will be responsible for its development until phase IIb trials are complete, after which Servier can exercise a licensing option in all markets excluding the US and Japan.

Servier has also gained the option to take an equity stake in GeNeuro as a minority shareholder in 2015.

Emmanuel Canet, vice-president for research and development at Servier, said: "The importance of this agreement demonstrates Servier's willingness to dedicate its research to serious diseases with major unmet medical needs."

This come after Servier recently announced a collaboration with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, focusing on the development of new cancer therapies.
