New prosthetic ankle prototype offers camera-controlled movement
Researchers in the US have developed a new prototype prosthetic ankle that can offer more natural movement through the use of a computer-controlled camera.
The Michigan Technological University-developed device combines a robotic ankle with a low-cost camera and a computer-controlled actuator, which adjusts the ankle's position through a system of cables.
Using the camera, the device can identify the profile of the ground, while the computer works out where the next footstep will be based on the movement of the leg. This allows the correct angle and stiffness to be applied to the ankle.
Moreover, the team has worked to refine the actuator's design to make it lighter and more streamlined, allowing it to be easily carried and removed when needed.
Mo Rastgaar, a Michigan Technological University mechanical engineer, said: "One of these days, we hope this can be brought to market, where it could really help people."
