Merial expands animal health portfolio with new horse drugs

Merial Animal Health has announced it will be expanding its animal health portfolio with the addition of two new drugs designed to treat inflammation of the joints in horses, as well as equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM).

Legend – intended for the treatment of joint pain – and Marquis, which is designed to tackle the EPM infection, have been acquired by Merial from Bayer Healthcare.

At present, Marquis is only available in the US and Canada, but Legend is sold in more than 40 countries, with the US, Canada, the UK and Japan being its primary markets.

Now that Merial has acquired the equine drugs, it plans to make both of them available around the world.

Head of the US large animal department at Merial Steve Mahoney commented: "Legend and Marquis both have long histories of success and enhance our existing product offerings to all horse owners, whether they trail ride, compete locally or have stood in the winners' circle on the national stage."
